NINETEEN
By now, and without Coach Keith making any sort of announcement, Cassie and Brian McAuley were sharing the job of point guard.
Coach kept starting Brian. Teddy, who kept track of the minutes everybody was playing along with everything else, told Gus and Jack right before the start of the Hollis Hills game that over the past three games, Cassie had gotten even more playing time than Brian.
“She’s earned it,” Jack said. He poked Gus and said, “I think even you would admit that.”
“Did I say she hadn’t?” Gus said.
“Admit it,” Jack said. “She’s doing better than you thought she would.”
“When did you become her agent?” Gus said.
“Hey,” Teddy said, “I’m the one running the numbers. I should be her agent.”
“Would it be okay if we just went ahead and played the game now?” Gus said.
“Thought you’d never ask,” Jack said.
Hollis Hills was in first place in the league, with just one loss so far, to Norris. And even though none of them had seen the Huskies play in person, they all knew this was going to be Cassie’s biggest test so far. It was because of the Huskies’ point guard, Fabian Morrell, who’d moved to Hollis Hills over the summer from New York City.
He wasn’t all that much taller than Cassie; they all saw that when the Huskies showed up in the gym at Walton Middle. He didn’t even look as if he weighed much more than Cassie, Fabian was that skinny. Teddy said he wasn’t much wider than one of the cornrows in his hair. He wore high-top, old-school Jordan sneakers, in red and black, which were the Huskies’ colors, and as soon as the Huskies started warming up, as soon as the Warriors saw him with a ball in his hands, they understood why he didn’t go by Fabian.
He’d shortened it.
He was just Fab.
Like he’d even made a cool move with his name.
There had been a story about him in the Hollis Hills newspaper, one Teddy had found online, that said the coach at Hollis Hills High wanted to put him on the varsity team, even though he was only in eighth grade, but that there was a rule in their district that you couldn’t play for a school that you weren’t attending.
“They make the rules,” Fab said in the story. “I just make plays.”
Gus had to admit, that sounded like a pretty fab response to him. When the Warriors were getting ready to huddle up around Coach before the start of the game, Teddy pointed at Fab Morrell with his score book.
“I’ve been watching him,” Teddy said. “I’m thinking I should just give him this book and let him fill in his stats himself.”
Teddy hadn’t seen Cassie standing behind Jack.
“You’re saying that you don’t think I can cover him?” she said, giving him the Look.
“Nothing personal, CB3,” Teddy said to her. “But I’m not sure CP3 could cover him.”
They both knew he was referring to Chris Paul.
“We’ll see,” Cassie said.
They all saw.

Fab was that good.
